Honorable mention goes to the Trollstigen on the Norsemen tour. While it may not compare on the bare ascent metrics it is HC in natural beauty. Switchback ascent flanked by waterfalls and surrounded by rocky peaks. Easy descent along a river, with a stop for espresso and cinnamon bun, followed by a ride through a farming valley with the scent of strawberries. Extra climb out of Valldal to round out the day.

In reply to Joyce Smith. if I remembered correctly, Gulfem was his first concubine before Mahidevran, but Gulfem lost the baby. Mahidevran also got pregnant the 2nd time after Mustafa, but she also miscarried. That's two. i dunno where else is the 3rd one.

Thanks for your note.
We have firmed up our thinking and would love your advice on 4 days riding from Svolvaer to Reine doing what looks like the most popular route:

1. Svolvaer to Hov via Henningsvær
2. Hov to Leknes via Steine and Stennesvik
3. A loop day from / to Leknes via Uttakleiv and Eggum
4. Leknes to Reine via Nusfjord.

How does that sound?
Can you assist with bike hire, maps, support if needed, baggage movement each day etc?

And any advice on getting from Reine to Alensund?

We are then also thinking of 3 days cycling around Hjorundfjord and Geitangerfjord?
Again…is this something that you could assist with?

Really look forward to hearing from you on what might be possible and if it is possible, could I get an approximate cost please? Just want to run it past the guys next Wednesday if you can.

Hi there. Do you arrange self guided trips? We are a group of 6 and would like to cycle for about 5 days in June 2025 in either the Lofoten islands or the Atlantic coast area from Kristiansund to Alesund.

In reply to Dylan Reynolds. Emperor Suleiman the Magnificent was only married to Empress Hurrem Sultan; other women were his consorts or co-wives. After developing strong feelings for Empress Hurrem Sultan, the Emperor refrained from any further sexual or romantic relationships with other women. However, the series portrayed this situation quite differently, and it is believed that it was done for dramatic effect.

Definitive information is hard to come by but the general idea is that Suleiman the Magnificent had several daughters, including Mihrimah Sultan, married to grand vizier Rüstem Pasha, and married to Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, another grand vizier. Ismihan Sultan married to Sinan Pasha, and Fatma Sultan married to Mustafa Pasha. Their marriages often reflected political alliances and power structures of the Ottoman Empire.

Who were the 4 daughters? I know he had a daughter who died before he met Hurrem. I know about Mihrimah, but who are the other 3? I can’t find anything about them

Hi Joyce. The Magnificent Century was a great series, wasn’t it? Really evocative. With regards to the question of how many sons Suleiman had, our history team consider not just Hurrem but also his other two consorts – Mahidevran Hatun and Gülfem Hatun. We were working off the premise that they bore 8 sons. Do note, though, that 3 sons died in childhood, and some documentation excludes them from the record.

I watched the series Magnificent Century and became fascinated with the story. It was intriguing and made me research the actual history, which, paints a different picture. Of course it was embellished as that’s what’s done to keep one watching. I’m puzzled as this piece said he had 8 sons. Hurrem bore 4 sons and 1 daughter while Mahidevern had Mustafa. That’s 5. Who had 3 other children? Also, in the series, Hurrem was Sulieman’s only legal wife, and he never married Mahidevern.

Hi Peggy. We think both seasons are great. The Fall obviously gives you access to the changing colours of Fall, which are amazing, but the spring flowers compare favourably.
